A rare and spectacular piece from Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2005 runway collection, this strapless ballgown is crafted in richly textured jacquard, layered with black silk chiffon and burgundy organza. The interplay of textiles creates a luminous effect: under flash, the gown takes on a rich burgundy glow; in natural daylight, it reads as almost black. The opulent floral pattern in purple, gold, copper, and bronze evokes the spirit of a Gustav Klimt painting.
The gown is structured with a full inner carcass dress: boning throughout the corset, built-in underskirt layers, and dramatic volume executed in the best traditions of old-school couture ballgowns. Despite being a 2000s runway piece, it has the soul and craftsmanship of a much earlier era — you would never guess it wasn’t made in the 1950s or 60s.
